After the lukewarm reception to the Nokia Lumia 800, the last thing Nokia needed was there to be a problem with its big brother, the Nokia Lumia 900. I reckon it’s fair to say that there’s a lot riding on this phone, so the fact that there is a problem with the Lumia 900 (or, at least, some Lumia 900s) is a bit bad, really.
According to WPCentral, the problem is colour-related; more specifically, some Lumia 900s have a purple tint to the screen, so that where the user should see grey, they’re seeing a sort of purple-y colour, as you can see in the pic. The good news, though, is that the problem is apparently limited to a small percentage of the Lumia 900s out there, but there’s even better news than that… Read the rest of this entry »
Right then, we all knew this day was coming, ever since my sister got a Samsung Galaxy Note, last week. She was, after all, the prime motivator for me getting my new phone now, instead of waiting till June, because I could not stand her having a better phone than me, for I am Technical Markus!
Ahem. Sorry.
So, since she has the Galaxy Note and I have the HTC One X, and since our arguments about whose phone is better have not abated since I got mine, it’s time for the big fight that’s been brewing since last week. Subjectively, the HTC One X will win, ‘cos it’s my phone. Objectively, though, the comparison gets a lot more interesting… Read the rest of this entry »
Y’know what? I knew this would happen, as soon as I got an Android phone. I knew I’d not be able to help myself. Yes, as the title says, I had a bit of a splurge on Google Play, just for the sheer novelty of being able to easily get apps onto my phone (and ooh blimey, it’s a joy, after fiddling about with Windows Mobile for two years). Basically, the upshot is that yesterday, I got an HTC One X, and then, erm, I may have got a bit carried away.
Yes, I went and downloaded twenty-nine apps in one single day. Twenty-chuffing-nine! I just couldn’t help it, the sheer novelty of it was just sooooo addictive. Now granted, as you can see from the pic, I went only for free apps, but still. So, why am I writing about this? Read the rest of this entry »
Right then, I’ve said before how much I like the Sense UI that HTC sticks on their Android phones. I really do like it, ‘cos I reckon it combines the best bits of Android, with a load of extra bits that stock Android doesn’t do. So yes, what I’m saying, if you picked up the subtle subtext, is that I like the Sense UI. It turns out that I’m not the only one who likes it, ‘cos it turns out that, according to LaptopMag, HTC themselves also think it’s a bit brilliant.
Yes, I know, it’d be a bit of a surprise if they suddenly came out and said that they thought it was an ugly piece of plop, but HTC’s Drew Bamford went into some details about why they think it’s the best UI out there, and it does make for fascinating reading… Read the rest of this entry »
Well, it feels like it’s been forever (while, in truth, it’s only been a couple of months), but I’ve finally done it. I’ve finally gone and got a new phone. Technical Markus has joined the world of Android, and in a move that should surprise precisely no-one (especially not if you’ve read the title to this blog post already, which you logically must have done, but meh, I thought I’d say it anyway), the phone I’ve bought is the HTC One X.
Come on, who’s really surprised? I’ve been wibbling on about it for long enough, right? Of course, there’s also the fact that HTC is easily my favourite manufacturer, so me buying their most powerful phone was pretty much a dead cert all along, really. So, why is it so good? Right, that’s it, then. The other big superphone has finally been unveiled, and we can finally put the two up against each other, to see how they actually stack up. So, settle in, and get ready for the battle of the superphones, as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X go to war.
So, let’s start with something completely subjective, and talk about the looks. Y’see, yesterday, I went on record as saying that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is gorgeous, and I stand by that assessment. However, the HTC One X is also gorgeous, and it really does come down to personal preference; I personally prefer the looks of the HTC One X, mainly because of the polycarbonate body. So, that out of the way, what about specs? Read the rest of this entry »
I never thought I’d say this, but the newest version of the Blackberry OS has me kind of excited. As much as I’ve whinged about RIM in the past, and decried how boring Blackberry phones had become, everything I’m seeing about Blackberry 10 is causing me to make appreciative ‘oooooh‘ noises. And today, something else has come out, that’s got me making even more appreciative ‘ooooh‘ noises.
It’s all to do with the camera software in Blackberry 10, ‘cos according to TechRadar, it uses proprietary technology from Scalado, called Rewind. Basically, if I’m honest, it’s technology that I am happy to simply call sorcery. Put simply, it lets you alter people’s faces in photos, to make them smile, after you’ve taken the photo… Read the rest of this entry »
Now then, I’ve spoken about the Tizen OS, precisely once before, and if you remember, I wasn’t that excited by what I was seeing. It didn’t look that brilliant, and I had my doubts about whether it would set the world alight, as some people seemed to be predicting. I said, at the time, that we’d have to wait and see what happens once the OS goes official, and comes out of beta.
Well, according to Tizen’s own website, that’s now, in fact, happened, and Tizen 1.0 Larkspur is go. Both the source code and the SDK have now been made available, so developers can get their hands on it to have a fiddle about with.
But will it be any good? Read the rest of this entry »
Well, it’s been one of the worst kept secrets in the entire history of mobile phones, and now, it’s finally been officially unveiled. Yep, after months and months of speculation, the Samsung Galaxy S III is here.
And ye gods, it is stunning!
I mean seriously, just look at it. That is one seriously good-looking phone, that is, with a super thin bezel round the edge, that makes it look like it’s all screen. As for the screen itself, it comes in at 4.8 inches, with a full HD 720p resolution. Oh, and it’s a Super-AMOLED screen, the same as you get on the Samsung Galaxy Note, so it’ll look properly, properly gorgeous… Read the rest of this entry »
I love technology, I do. I love to see it when terrifyingly intelligent people start working on things for the betterment of mankind, mainly because there’s often a 50/50 chance that they’re actually Bond villains, intent on ruling the world, and that’s always exciting. However, even if they’re not, their sheer exuberance about SCIENCE(!) fills me with a sort of childish glee.
That 50/50 rule especially applies when we’re talking about nanotechnology. On the one hand, they could be about to bring about a Grey Goo-esque apocalypse. On the other, though, they may be doing what researchers at MIT have done; they’ve been working on glass that’s low-glare, water-repellent, and self-cleaning… Read the rest of this entry »
