LG Optimus 4X HD unveiled – like an HTC One X, but Korean

I’ve gone on at unbelievable length (seriously, I never shut up about the subject), about how I love massive, powerful, big-screened superphones. The most recent example is the Samsung Galaxy S3, which fits those criteria perfectly, and before that, there was the HTC One X, a phone so magnificently impressive that I bought one.

And now, according to Engadget, LG have thrown their hat into the “massive, powerful, big-screened superphone” arena, with the LG Optimus 4X HD, a phone that can best be described as “what an HTC One X would be like if the Koreans made it”.

Yes, the specs really are that similar; this is like the One X’s brother from another mother… (more…)

More Google Glass details emerge – what will the Android glasses be like?

Remember me talking about Google Glass, the project Google were working on, that entailed making a pair of Android-powered smart glasses? Well, we now have some brand new details about what these mythical beasties will actually entail, and it’s a bit less all-encompassingly futuristic than I expected, while still being pretty chuffing cool.

Y’see, according to CNet, we can forget any ideas of having a Terminator-style overlay, over everything we see. I can’t help but feel that’s a tiny bit disappointing, but let’s be honest, it should have been obvious that was never going to happen, because having your whole field of vision obscured by Youtube is sure to have you walking into an open manhole cover and dying… (more…)

Ooh, look – HTC Desire C officially announced!

Right then folks, we’ve seen rumours about this thing for a little while, now, but HTC have finally gone and made it official. Yup, the HTC Desire C has officially been announced, and we have a handy dandy video promo, to get us all excited…

Weeeeeell, okay, granted, it’s not that exciting, ‘cos the HTC Desire C is an entry-level phone, and they’re bound to be inherently less exciting than something like the HTC One X. Still, it’s quite a nice looking little phone, and do you know why I like it so much? Well, I shall tell ya… (more…)

Oh look, the HTC One X has been (badly) ripped off already

Well folks, it’s Friday, and furthermore, it’s a slow news day, so let’s talk about something pointless. I’ve gone on record several times, to say that I love Chinese clone phones, ‘cos they also make me titter. There’s something inherently seeing a phone that’s blatantly a Nokia, but with a big badge on it that says NOKLA. Or that Blackberry rip-off that had the awesomely funny (seriously, I lol’d) Bleckbarry name.

So yes. Chinese rip-offs amuse me, so imagine my glee when I saw a story on Engadget, about a company who’ve ripped off the phone I myself own, the HTC One X. It’s called the Konka W900 (oh, and humorously, the name uses the Nokia font), and my first thought was that there’s no way it’s as powerful as the One X. And am I right..? (more…)

HTC Golf leaks online again, as the HTC Desire C

Right then, a few weeks back, I did a blog post about a rumoured HTC phone which was purportedly going to be released in the not too distant future, and which was known by the development codename of HTC Golf. At the time, it was rumoured that it’d finally be released as the HTC Wildfire C, but now, the phone has leaked again, and it’s apparently not called that.

Apparently, according to ITProPortal, it’s actually due to be released as the HTC Desire C. However, if I’m honest, that strikes me as being a little bit odd. Y’see, the phone shares a lot of design cues with the much more powerful HTC One X, and HTC are all about their One series these days. So, why resurrect the Desire name? (more…)

The Big Fight – HTC One X vs. Samsung Galaxy Note

TechnicalMarkus Posted on: May 9th, 2012

Right then, we all knew this day was coming, ever since my sister got a Samsung Galaxy Note, last week. She was, after all, the prime motivator for me getting my new phone now, instead of waiting till June, because I could not stand her having a better phone than me, for I am Technical Markus!

Ahem. Sorry.

So, since she has the Galaxy Note and I have the HTC One X, and since our arguments about whose phone is better have not abated since I got mine, it’s time for the big fight that’s been brewing since last week. Subjectively, the HTC One X will win, ‘cos it’s my phone. Objectively, though, the comparison gets a lot more interesting… (more…)

I may have got a bit carried away – 29 apps in one day

Y’know what? I knew this would happen, as soon as I got an Android phone. I knew I’d not be able to help myself. Yes, as the title says, I had a bit of a splurge on Google Play, just for the sheer novelty of being able to easily get apps onto my phone (and ooh blimey, it’s a joy, after fiddling about with Windows Mobile for two years). Basically, the upshot is that yesterday, I got an HTC One X, and then, erm, I may have got a bit carried away.

Yes, I went and downloaded twenty-nine apps in one single day. Twenty-chuffing-nine! I just couldn’t help it, the sheer novelty of it was just sooooo addictive. Now granted, as you can see from the pic, I went only for free apps, but still. So, why am I writing about this? (more…)

HTC says their Sense UI is better than everyone else’s custom UI

TechnicalMarkus Posted on: May 8th, 2012

Right then, I’ve said before how much I like the Sense UI that HTC sticks on their Android phones. I really do like it, ‘cos I reckon it combines the best bits of Android, with a load of extra bits that stock Android doesn’t do. So yes, what I’m saying, if you picked up the subtle subtext, is that I like the Sense UI. It turns out that I’m not the only one who likes it, ‘cos it turns out that, according to LaptopMag, HTC themselves also think it’s a bit brilliant.

Yes, I know, it’d be a bit of a surprise if they suddenly came out and said that they thought it was an ugly piece of plop, but HTC’s Drew Bamford went into some details about why they think it’s the best UI out there, and it does make for fascinating reading… (more…)

Well, I can finally legitimately say this – dear lord, the HTC One X is AMAZING!

Well, it feels like it’s been forever (while, in truth, it’s only been a couple of months), but I’ve finally done it. I’ve finally gone and got a new phone. Technical Markus has joined the world of Android, and in a move that should surprise precisely no-one (especially not if you’ve read the title to this blog post already, which you logically must have done, but meh, I thought I’d say it anyway), the phone I’ve bought is the HTC One X.

Come on, who’s really surprised? I’ve been wibbling on about it for long enough, right? Of course, there’s also the fact that HTC is easily my favourite manufacturer, so me buying their most powerful phone was pretty much a dead cert all along, really. So, why is it so good? (more…)

So, how does the Samsung Galaxy S III stack up against the HTC One X?

TechnicalMarkus Posted on: May 4th, 2012

Right, that’s it, then. The other big superphone has finally been unveiled, and we can finally put the two up against each other, to see how they actually stack up. So, settle in, and get ready for the battle of the superphones, as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X go to war.

So, let’s start with something completely subjective, and talk about the looks. Y’see, yesterday, I went on record as saying that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is gorgeous, and I stand by that assessment. However, the HTC One X is also gorgeous, and it really does come down to personal preference; I personally prefer the looks of the HTC One X, mainly because of the polycarbonate body. So, that out of the way, what about specs? (more…)
